The Lion Design

Imagine this, you are creating a new brand of fashion products. You pay 50$ to run a contest between designers, to get a nice recognizable logo for your new clothing line. So here comes the Indian web company, by the name of scientific, who will be also competing .

These are some parts of their description:

Scientific web is a Web design company and website development services firm based in Rajasthan, India. …… With competencies in business process and Integration, Integrated e-business solutions and network infrastructure solution, we have successfully catered to hundreds international clients located in USA, Canada, UK, Australia and European countries. The company is currently operating from its state-of-the-art development centre in INDIA and business development-cum-customer support centre in the U.S.A and Canada. “

“The company is flourishing with glory of success and maintains its supremacy in the world market. The clients all around the globe witnessed the niche of rich quality and service. “

That text is actually four times longer, all about their great achievements and how good they are. So let’s see what they can do:

Left one is a design, provided by Scientific Web. Right one is a logo from Music Festival, that was taken place about 2 years ago. And you can only imagine how that lion picture has spread around in those years. It’s not even 100% sure, who is the original author of the image, because it’s so widely used.

So when you are putting every last penny in your new business, why would you act any different when getting a logo. Saving couple hundred bucks now, can cost you millions in future.

Now you open your clothing business, it’s all going very well, business is expanding and your brand is known all over the world. And suddenly few years later, some random guy sees your product or commercial and comes to you saying “Hey why are you using my design?”

This means, your whole business can collapse in that moment and you are in the middle of worst chaos that you could ever imagine. Even if you manage to find your designer from India, he does not care, he probably can’t even understand what he did wrong.

Bye bye beautiful dreams, you’re life is fu#ked!

Here is another lion, just to remember that there are more ways ruining yourself, when trying to be cheap:

Corporate logo design for 50$ ?

Getting a professional logo for your company from a crowd contest site, for 50$. It’s like going into “eat all you can” restaurant. Pay your 50 bucks and get what everyone else is having. Don’t expect something specially made for you.

Pakistan worker fayyaz786, from scriptlance site offers you todays menu:

Oh my, 4 dishes without any waiting, must be my lucky day. “Yes sir, my friend, special for you only, please please”

But seriously, who else already had it:

Reaching for the stars

When someone tells you that they have 10 years of experience in their field, it automatically generates some reliability. So you let the person do his job, because you can trust him. Or can you? But different people from different cultures have their own way of thinking.

Using a bit different approach this time, here is an actual screenshot with a dialogue.

To save the buyer from any harassment, this time there will not be any picture or names, but we let the dialogue speak for itself. The following material used, is for educational purpose only.

The white box is the designer with 10 years of experience, as he claims.
Green box is another designer.

Now about the mentioned clip art. Picture of two men in suits, reaching for a star.

Person who claims having 10 years of experience in graphic design, will make you a logo, using a picture that has been used literally over hundreds of times all over the web.  That’s something you don’t see everyday, yet it still happens, everyday.

Get cheap labor force from India, pay 100$, this is what you will get.

No need for 10 years experience when 5 minutes in ms paint will be enough for that. You get the same results and it costs you absolutely nothing, except loosing your potential clients. But still, the designer and all his experiences, and the price is good, so how can it be wrong?

Now, the purpose of this post will stay in educational purposes only. Philosophically speaking – there is no right or wrong. Integration in different ways has always been there, and it will be there in future.  Creating effective communication between people from different cultures can be challenging. Sometimes it’s the ego, that stops doing it, to become aware and try to see things from another point of view. Accepting those views and moving on with more experienced state of mind. Having the knowledge of what you can expect from different situations.

To speak it more clearly, when buying or using a service from another country, you cannot expect that product or service to have the same impact in your country, in your culture.

Like the example here with a logo design. You can get your logo designed even for as low as 5$, so why would you even think about spending 500$ or 1000$, maybe even more?
But is that 5$ worth logo a great deal? Sure it is, but now looking it from another point of view, can it have the same impact in your case?

Here is when the cultural difference comes in. In some less developed countries, that 5$ logo can make a big impact. Because the living standards and values are way more different. There is no need for thorough researches, days of sketching and exploring every aspect of the company, just to draw some identify for it. If the average salary all around you is 100$, then who really cares how it’s going to look like.

A shopkeeper in Africa wants to have his business identity on the wall of his newly opened place. Will he hire some European designer and pay 1000$ for it? No, he will take that old bucket and just paint the name there. After all, someone has taught him how to write, what else does he need. Will it harm his business? Absolutely not, it has a big impact on the whole village, everyone will respect him.
Now that shopkeeper is applying the same measurements, but doing it so, in some big city. He takes that bucket and paints the business name. Then what happens? People will probably get scared even entering that place.

It’s an extreme example, but the meaning will be the same. The shopkeeper from that African village would not understand, why hes measurements will not work in the city. It’s because people from different cultures, with different backgrounds, have all different perspectives and values.

Now looking back at the screenshot that was provided in the beginning. Designer with 10 years of experience. Coming from a society, where having the knowledge of how to find a picture from web. Add some text, maybe modify it just a little. And if that’s all what it takes, for making a logo that will make a great impact around there. Then there is no need to take any extra steps.

But now you know that the same tactics will not work for everyone and everywhere. And it could also make more harm than good. In short - don’t make people scared to enter your shop. And that’s what must be considered, when making any decisions based on prices. First get to know the values around yourself, then find someone who will understand and share the same values. And then based by that, it’s time to make further decisions.

Meanwhile in 25$ real estate

Something from scriptlance design contest site, again the user mdmamun, this time we are in real estate business.

Left one is from the Bangladesh designer, right one is from http://www.shutterstock.com

Now when you have a company without a logo, and you are trying to get it done as cheap as possible, perhaps from a design contest, then this is what you are offered for 25$. *Sigh* Not a bad picture, but are you willing to share your company’s identity with hundreds, or even thousands of people. And the numbers can only be growing, because it’s available for anyone out there and there is nothing you can do about it. Everyone can use it, you are not owning it, plus you will be the only foul out there who paid that much for it.

To prevent it for happening in the first place, it is definitely a better choice to pay twenty times or even more, and hire a professional. Logos are not made in 5 minutes from anything that comes up from the web. It can take days, weeks, even months, to create a suitable design. There is absolutely no quality in the situation, where you get 6-7 designs in one hour, from one user. It’s a product made on assembly line. And if you don’t like the product, it will be offered for someone else. Or if you do like it, there’s no guarantee that it still can’t be offered for someone else, at the same time.

Sometimes it’s crucial to make that bigger investment, for gaining a better profit in future. Your business will be taken much more seriously too.  Imagine, if that business with a 25$ clip art logo, will be a service providing company. How can a service provider be taken seriously if it cant even take care of itself. You can’t even get a decent tattoo out there with 25$, and you want to get some identity design done?

Back to India

From Kolkata, India, we have reetwik. Nice introduction too, at scriptlance.
“6 years of design experience in both Web & Graphics design. Passion for design and willing to go over and to complete projects on time. Highly organized – improved procedures, processes and time tracking in every position. Client interaction & track along with the Design Team. Presently, working for OnlineStart – India as a Design Head.”

The head designer from India, offers this logo on the left, for 35$. The one from right, is just one example, where the icon has already been used. There are actually at least more than 5 companies using that already, most of them in India and Pakistan.

Oh and if you want to use that icon as well, you can get it from
http://www.templatesbox.com/blog/2010/07/business-company-logo-template/
It’s free, and most of all, you don’t have to be a head designer, to click the download button.

Get two with one

Finally something else besides balls, mdmamun has chosen something gentle this time. Good choice, when without balls, there is always a possibility to show your tenderness.

Left one from mdmamun, right ones you can get from http://www.webdesignhot.com/free-vector-graphics/abstract-colorful-design-elements-vector-set/

Obsessed with balls

The man just wont stop, mdmamun with another hit. This time the Bangladesh designer has chosen something yellow.

Left one is from youknowwho at scriptlance crowd contest, right one can be found in many places around the web, this one for example is vectrostock’s at http://www.vectorstock.com/royalty-free-vector/3d-sphere-and-arrow-vector-133831

Which one would you prefer, yellow balls or maybe… blue balls?

Shiny blue balls

There are more creative men in Bangladesh, like scriptlance user mdmamun for example.
Like his introduction says “I am a hard worker.”

Left one is from mdmamun, right one from iwoorx.com

I’m sure that stealing others balls will not make you more manly. You’re doing it wrong mdmamun.

Playa playa

Our friend mrfaruk, a real playa from Bangladesh. Pulling out logos like a magician.

Left one from the Bangladesh man with magic skills, right one is from brandcrowd.
